The project "the perpetual cycle of human wear" proposes a dialog between students involved in clothing (fashion, costume design, art) in two schools, l'ENSAD and school of fashion Design in the University of applied arts from Belgrade.
Major theme: Contrast integration of simple and functional military forms with redundant, hand-made Serbian traditional details, enriched with modern-high-tech elements.
Up till nowadays, military uniform has played an important role in Serbian history, primarily because of the vast number of wars and conflicts that took part in the Balkan region. The military uniform represents an important symbol in Serbian national heritage and is still salient in Serbian contemporary history, along with other forms of Serbian national clothing. Furthermore, and closely related to above mentioned, are the destructions of other Serbian cultural symbols, namely churches, monasteries, houses, monuments etc. in recent civil wars in the region.
By using costume, my objective is to try to portray Serbian culture as a culture that is “wounded” , that “bleeds”, and to send a massage that Serbian culture is the culture that deserves preservation to the equal extent as the other World cultures. I will treat this challenge as something that has to go beyond individual and national interests of disputed sides, and that the culture “per se” has its precious and global value.
My project could be described as a two-layer creation. In the first layer I will try to combine certain elements of Serbian traditional clothing that symbolizes positive feelings and states, with elements of traditional military uniform that conventionally represents suffering, pain and terror, and has a function of frightening the enemy. The idea is to capture the whole domain of one’s emotional inner-states and to emphasize the close inter-relation of them. In the second layer chronological aspect will be emphasized, by slightly damaging the costumes (or attaching symbols of damage to it), and at the same time elevating the costumes by adding high-tech elements. This integration is particularly relevant to Serbian culture, which is challenged to swiftly transform itself from the state of injure and regression, to the position of progressive and open, modern World culture.
