Concept

Every ethnicity nourishes its historic tradition through culture and art,beacuse it is one of mans basic needs.Ethnic clothing all over the world,no matter how similar it may appear to be,wears a strong signature of tradition and specific national characteristics, which help keeping the unique artistic expression.
That’s why it is a real challenge to make a clash between two or more national costumes and craft and combine them into a modern, everyday piece of clothing.
While thinking about national costume as an important mark of tradition and national culture.
I wanted to keep the basic form and elements of the serbian national costume (a peasant’s robes) which can easily be translated into present day, combined with the French national costume.
The elements that emphasize those costumes,the details that make them so unique,remarkable and ever so inspireing, by that I mean mostly embroidery,hand-work and materials. With those elements I would like to modify into a clean, simple shape of modern times.
It’s all possible thanks to the simplicity of form in the serbian national costume,its rich layering and minimalistic value of ornaments,softened by the fine notes of french lines,materials,layering shades and the entire atmosphere of the french national costume.
The main elements of my costume would be a dress, an apron(wrap), a shirt and socks, tights, because I think they are great representatives of these two cultures and their national costumes.
In this project I wanted to put an accent to unique hand work,layering,combining of natural materials, and a toned-down palette of colours reaching from white and grey to the darkest blues and black.
Achievement of this project is in overcoming the classic approach to the national costume, moulding it into a modern day garment.
